16 0ctober 1961 and August Bank Holiday 1955

I am exploring my childhood memories of holidays spent with my parent’s family around Aberdare in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales. This was inspired by some old family photographs that were as familiar to me as the places they were taken. These two experimental pieces are collages I have made from two separate black and white photographs. I am using these as a base layer and will add transparent layers of digital photographs. Other layers will be applied using worked charcoal, ink or acrylic to represent rocks and landscape. The memories and stories they invoke combined with the ‘geography’ of the place are important to me because at the same time I am asking myself questions about belonging and my place here and now. What makes me who I am? What makes me tick? The works are as much a celebration of my family and the human experience as a strong and reassuring link for me to my roots and to the question of who I am.
