Every year in April the Bergen Kunstall hosts the graduation exhibition with students from the Fine Arts BA Programme of the Faculty of Art, Music and Design. This art gallery is a centre for contemporary art. The striking building was designed by the architect Ole Landmark in 1935 and has gallery spaces, a cafe and bookshop.
On my visit on 25 April 2019 I was handed a sheet containing a plan of the galleries with the names of the students exhibiting in each gallery and a bit about their work. There were 5 galleries exhibiting the graduates’ work and the handout stated that there were 24 students exhibiting in the show.
I started in Gallery IV which was also identified in the plan as Intimate knowledge. The exhibition had no labels by the individual student;s work so one had to constantly refer to the sheet. This was a great disadvantage especially as it was not clear when you were in the gallery which work belonged to which artist. The exhibits did not always seem to be in the place referred to in the plan. It was difficult to see why a simple label by each student’s work identifying whose work it was and the title could not have been done.
Overall I thought the works were well placed and the lighting good. There was plenty of room around the installations and a good mix of 2D and 3D works. Gallery I was particularly well set out but that is perhaps because it was the largest gallery.
A very thought provoking exhibition and very illuminating to see what other Fine Art graduates have produced in Norway.
